Mary Chawner was the daughter of William Burwash, watch case maker, and wife to William Chawner, spoonmaker, and was based in London. In 1834 Mary became the sole proprietor following the death of her husband, and registered the MC mark that is found on all of her items.Mary continued with the business before passing it on to her son-in-law George Adams in November 1840, marking an end to the MC mark. Mary was belatedly recognised as a woman of influence and has several hallmarked pieces in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, based in Washington.
